Gizmodo « next » Cases Ivyskin Xylo T2 Reflect Chrome iPhone Case == Touchscreen Your iPhone Through a Hard Shell Putting an iPhone in a case is still not something I'd do or recommend as necessary, but if you must protect your precious, here's a case that claims to protect your touchscreen with a layer of plastic, but also allow you to finger the lcd just the same. It, of course, involves some patent-pending tech which sounds like hocus pocus to me. Here's what Mike Wissman, VP of Ops for Ivyskin, gave me as an explanation. The case uses a patent pending design called Surface Xylo Wave (SXW)В© technology passes ultrasonic waves that pass over the touch screen panel and transfer them to the iPhone's screen without any interferences. When the panel is touched, a portion of the wave is absorbed. This change in the ultrasonic waves registers the position of the touch event and sends this information to the iPhone's screen for processing. Anyone care to explain that explanation to me? Happy to assist, Brian... Surface Xylo Wave (SXW)В© technology passes ultrasonic waves = silently goes through physical barriers that pass over the touch screen panel and transfer them to the iPhone's screen without any interferences. = extreme cost raises no objections from gullible buyers When the panel is touched, a portion of the wave is absorbed. = advertising imprints a "must own!" impression in nerd's mind This change in the ultrasonic waves registers the position of the touch event and sends this information to the iPhone's screen for processing. = credit card is charged successfully by daftrok at 06:11 PM on 04/12/08 Reply by Email * Steve Jobs uses dark Satanic powers in order for his multi touch screen to be touched even if impeded by a clear material. by oudemia at 06:14 PM on 04/12/08 Reply by Email * I actually managed to dent the screen of my touch after putting one of those protective films on it. It wasn't registering taps in the same way after being covered, and I dinged it with my fingernail as I tapped ever harder. No plastic film anymore. by C.S.M. Technophile at 06:24 PM on 04/12/08 Reply by Email * It's all blabber. The iPhone screen detects changes in the electric field (which your finger absorbs), which is how it works in the first place. Ultrasonic waves are more what my Sonicare toothbrush uses. The only way this could work is if the plastic covering was electrically invisible, or if it was somehow able to duplicate the negative capacitive charge on the underside of the cover. by bigfatduck at 06:29 PM on 04/12/08 Reply by Email * snakeoil or not, if this case actually fits snugly on the iphone without it sliding around in the slightest bit, and doesn't allow ridiculous amounts of dust/dirt to enter and scratch the hell out of the chrome surround of the iphone, i'll buy it. btw oudemia, that's amazing- do you mean to say you dented the plastic film cover? because i've never seen a panel of glass "dent". by C.S.M. Technophile at 06:37 PM on 04/12/08 Reply by Email * They also state on the website when talking about how it works that "The touch screen panel is coated with a special patent pending material that conducts a continuous electrical current across the the shield. The human body is also an electrical device which has stored electrons and therefore also exhibits capacitance". In other words, the case is somehow manufactured so that the capacitive absorption your body carries is transferred through the plastic and relayed to the iPhone's capacitance sensors. I'm not much help, I know. Still no clue where he got anything to do with ultrasonic waves. by Charpan at 06:41 PM on 04/12/08 Reply by Email * Those cases are communicating and getting organised by abusing the devices they are supposed to protect. One day, when "The Case" to lead all the cases comes down to earth, they will revolt and destroy the Earth! All your cases are belong to us! by gamecrazychris at 06:41 PM on 04/12/08 Reply by Email * I think I'm gonna get this, the stupid "enviromentallly friendly" case I got scratched my iphone(it was small but I'm still mad) and I've only had mine a week! by gizzmacc at 07:02 PM on 04/12/08 Reply by Email * I've gone through 3 cases but they all suck...this case looks HOT.... I'd buy one...I think with this case I have to buy a case for my case now ;o)... by SowndOfDeth at 07:08 PM on 04/12/08 Reply by Email * That finger model could have done a better paint job. by oudemia at 07:18 PM on 04/12/08 Reply by Email * @bigfatduck: No, the actual ipod screen. It's not a crack or a chip, it's a slightly curved press mark made by one of my fingernails. So yeah, dent. by ryanrule at 07:22 PM on 04/12/08 Reply by Email * you cant dent glass. did they start using plastic on the touches? by strider_mt2k at 07:37 PM on 04/12/08 Reply by Email * Connectedness Index: 670 Brought to you by Acura TSX It needs a hyphen, and it needs an "O". I'd always put it in the "space age polymer" category. by tangledweb16 at 07:59 PM on 04/12/08 Reply by Email * @oudemia: It's definitely glass, I promise. So I don't know how he "dented" it..... Really. by secretmanofagent at 08:09 PM on 04/12/08 Reply by Email * What's with the nail polish? Is this designed for emo kids or what? "passes ultrasonic waves and teenage angst that pass over the touch screen panel and transfer them to the iPhone's screen without any interferences, which allows the iPhone to automatically select My Chemical Romance, Underoath, and New Found Glory into a playlist." by oudemia at 08:27 PM on 04/12/08 Reply by Email * @tangledweb16: I did it myself! With my own little fingernail! And it really is a dent of sorts -- not a scratch, crack, chip. A tiny curved line that matches my fingertip. Ha. I wonder if it would show up in a picture. by Rev. Only the Iphone has glass the touch IPOD has a high quality plastic. I believe I read this fact shortly before the ipod touch was introduced. *i bought a hard case and has a scratch the first day! I love my DLO jam jacket, and I have no need for sreen cover, my iphone screen is great and the silicone jacket prevents butterfingers. by widdma at 06:53 AM on 04/14/08 Reply by Email * Anyone else notice the similarities between the product description and Wikipedia's entry on touchscreens? From product description: "...When the panel is touched, a portion of the wave is absorbed. This change in the ultrasonic waves registers the position of the touch event and sends this information to the iPhone's screen for processing.." From [en.wikipedia] : "...When the panel is touched, a portion of the wave is absorbed. This change in the ultrasonic waves registers the position of the touch event and sends this information to the controller for processing..." Also note that the iPhone's touchscreen is not SAW but Capacitive. by apeguero at 05:02 PM on 04/16/08 Reply by Email * Okay but it adds to the size of the iPhone. I protect mine from scratches and smudges by using the ShieldZone's front and rear iPhone cover skin. It works like a charm. It won't protect against dents and dings if I drop it but it does add nice grip which makes it really hard for me to actually drop it. by at 04/29/08 12:22 AM Comment on this post Reply by Email Login with your username and password below.
